Spinnaker Issues That I'm Running Into:
(1) How to run the Spinnaker Halyard? The spreaders and front diamond wire are in the way.
[I ran it through the spreader. -- No problems so far.]
Looking up the right side of the mast where the Spin. Halyard will Run |
(2) How does the Main Halyard Make its way through the trampoline and into the Spinnaker Bag?
[The SNU bag, at its end towards the boat, has a grommet and two openings. I've not got a good system yet for routing the main halyard which must traverse from under the left side of the pole to the right, over the front right side of the front-crossbar, and then to the right side of the mast where I have my halyard block. It's the most challenging problem so far.]
(3) How to attach the mast Spinnaker Halyard Block?
[ I chose to use a hard fixture instead of the line loop methods that I've seen online. I use a Bow shackle to allow the block to traverse around the mast. My block is approx. 26ft from the crossbar.]

Hobie 20 Mainsail Halyard Ring and Masthead Hook:
One common problem with Hobie Cats is how to hook/unhook the mainsail halyard ring on the masthead hook. In order to get this system to work well:
(1) The halyard knot must face the mast like the image below. [Center of the picture shows the main halyard, the halyard ring which sits on the hook, and the mainsail headplate]
Mainsail Headplate. Note the halyard knot facing towards the mast. |
Masthead hook. Located on Right hand side. This determines direction of rotation required. |
(3) When raising and lowering the mainsail, the boat must be pointed directly into the wind. It is very important to have the boat de-powered and not have the mainsail cross-winded. Taking breeze from a-beam greatly increases track friction, and leads to a very difficult to hoist sail.
Here is the "Mast Rotator Bar" [Picture Center -- Detach the Mast Rotation Line from the Shackle 1st]

Riveting Spinnaker Halyard Block near top of Mast
Before riveting tang for spinnaker halyard block (2014) |
Two shackle system for holding down tack and Jib Halyard. I want to switch to a soft shackle that I can tension somehow.
(2015 -- Need a way to tension jib halyard) |
Forestay and Sidestay Shackle Layout (Foremost in photo) Shackle for Trapeze Wires (Rearmost in the photo) |
Trampoline Track - Riveted to the boat and keeps jib car slug captive. I ground away the track towards the rear to pull my car slug out (not shown here) |
Very slim Hull cross section compared to the Hobie 18. The Hull is also seamless on the top side giving the boat a sleek, modern look. |
Current Two Shackle Method. Goal is to replace the halyard shackle with a soft-shackle. |
